THE PLANET AFRICA EXPERIENCE

One of the most influential decades of Black Film History, the program showcased over 150 films representing the diversity of Pan-African perspectives and art in storytelling.

In 1995, the Toronto International Film Festival launched a new section showcasing films from Africa and the African diaspora. Over its 10 years, Planet Africa brought films by Safi Faye, John Akomfrah, Abderrahmane Sissako, Euzhan Palcy, Charles Burnett, Djibril Diop Mambéty, and more to Toronto.

ORIGINS, HISTORY & LEGACY

Created in 1995 by Cameron Bailey, Planet Africa was a Festival programme dedicated to cinema from Africa and the African diaspora. Programmed by Cameron Bailey, followed by June Givanni and  then Gaylene Gould, it ran as a part of the TIFF Festival for 10 years.

In the ten years  (1995 - 2004) that Planet Africa ran, it successfully launched careers,  created new audience and solidified Toronto as  multicultural destination for world class cinema.

SEPTEMBER  2020 marks  the 25th Anniversary of the program  to celebrate Special Edition PLANET AFRICA '25 Program, which will add several new films and talent to the Planet Africa Legacy.
