The Black List is Planet Africa Legacy’s annual guide to Black films screening at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). Spanning features, documentaries, shorts and other festival sections, The Black List highlights Black, African, Caribbean and Diaspora filmmakers, stories and talent across the TIFF programme, creating a living record of Black cinema at one of the world’s leading film festivals.

The Black List also recognizes returning filmmakers and talent who are Planet Africa alumni and have new work screening at TIFF. Planet Africa ran for ten years, from 1995 to 2004, and was credited with helping launch careers and create new audiences.

By connecting today’s festival selections with the people whose work was part of Planet Africa’s history, the list offers a visible reminder that the programme’s legacy continues, through careers that have evolved, filmmakers who have returned to TIFF, and new generations of Black screen storytellers carrying that history forward.

Together, the annual lists create an evolving record of Black cinema at TIFF, documenting not only what is screening today, but the people, careers and creative connections that link the festival’s present to the legacy of Planet Africa.
